Who We Are (History on Pool Loss)
Return to Board Activities POWSA P.O. Box 1231 Mechanicsville, MD 20659 Last modified: October 5, 2001 |
Our original neighborhood had an outdoor community swimming pool. Many Mechanicsville and Chaptico
children learned to swim by attending swimming lessons in our original pool.
Unfortunately, when the original developer went bankrupt, the neighborhood resources were sold to a
corporation which donated the swimming pool to St. Mary's County Department of Recreation and Parks.

The County found it less expensive to destroy the pool than make the extensive
maintenance repairs which were needed. Wicomico Shores lost its swimming pool in 1985; the County
filled the pool with dirt. In April 2001, POWSA found more than 95% of the homeowners lamented the loss of swimming pool. The upcoming Chaptico Park long range Master Plan described an indoor swimming pool. However, by Summer 2001 it appeared the nearby Chaptico Park pool would not become a reality. Click Here for Enterprise Newspaper article "Chaptico Park gets go-ahead for scaled-back facilities" October 5, 2001. POWSA asked Department of Recreation and Parks about community swimming pools. On Department of Recreaction and Parks suggestion, in July 2001, POWSA Chairman met with Lexington Park's Town Creek's Swimming Pool Board by phone to primarily learn how the Town Creek Pool maintenance and membership was handled. In August 2001, POWSA began a Swimming Pool Fund (interest bearing business savings account) using money raised by fundraising. Click Here for Fundraising Info. POWSA desires the return of a community swimming pool for Wicomico Shores and again the surrounding area. While it is possible that there may be a joint effort with Department of Recreation and Parks, there is a desire to retain some control of the future pool so that no possibility of dirt infill could occur again with the future pool without replacement. Now is the time to be active in your community association! If you would like information on becoming a member of our neighborhood civic association, POWSA, then click here.
