After 11 years, St. Mary’s government will begin recouping money spent on a road in Wicomico Shores. The county commissioners enacted a levy ordinance after a split vote on Tuesday. ‘‘This is the end of a long journey on this particular taxing district,” said George Erichsen, director of public works and transportation. The levy is assessed on 59 properties on Golf Course Drive in Wicomico Shores to pay back $257,222 over 20 years. That comes to $217.99 per property per year. The board expected Commissioner Larry Jarboe (R) to make the motion to approve, as he represents the northern county, but instead he offered a motion to table it. Jarboe wanted to wait until drainage improvements are made under the road before the special tax was assessed. Commissioner Daniel H. Raley (D) offered a second to discuss the matter. ‘‘The taxpayers, all the taxpayers have put X amount of dollars in this project,” Raley said. ‘‘To table it would mean the citizens couldn’t recoup their money for a long time.” But Jarboe said he wanted the citizens there to see improvements made for drainage before paying the bill. Scheduled for next fiscal year, there is an additional $167,630 slated for roadwork there on Golf Course Drive. The original taxing district began in 1995. ‘‘The difference between 11 years and 12 years isn’t that much of a difference,” Jarboe said. ‘‘The residents up there have told us a number of times this board has addressed issues up there,” Raley said, with improvements to the wharf, tennis courts, golf course and Golf Course Drive. ‘‘Don’t you think we have to start paying all the citizens back?” E-mail Jason Babcock at jbabcock@somdnews.com.
